{"id":865,"date":"2019-12-03T19:54:50","date_gmt":"2019-12-04T02:54:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pimaair.wpengine.com\/?post_type=museum_aircraft&#038;p=865"},"modified":"2019-12-30T10:23:41","modified_gmt":"2019-12-30T17:23:41","slug":"cassutt","status":"publish","type":"museum_aircraft","link":"https:\/\/pimaair.org\/museum-aircraft\/cassutt\/","title":{"rendered":"Cassutt"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Cassutt Formula One Pylon Racer<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Cassutt.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Cassutt.jpg\" alt=\"A picture of the Cassutt Formula One Pylon Racer\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Formula One pylon racing began in 1947 when the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company sponsored the event at the National Air Races.\u00a0 The sport quickly became a favorite of the fans because the two-mile rectangular closed course brought the action right in front of the spectators with the planes racing at 50 feet off the ground, often wing tip to wing tip.\u00a0 Planes were restricted by wing size, weight, and engine displacement so that all were evenly matched.\u00a0 Aircraft design was very important, and most planes were designed and constructed by individuals.\u00a0 Tom Cassutt, a pilot for Trans World Airlines, designed and built his racer in 1958.\u00a0 He quickly issued plans for it hoping that more people would build racers to expand the competition.\u00a0 Few Cassutt racers have been built exactly according to the plans, most incorporate some changes desired by the person building the plane.\u00a0 However, Cassutt based planes have been quite popular and successful in Formula One racing and more than 800 have been built.\u00a0 The Cassutt in the Pima Air &amp; Space Museum collection was originally built and test flown by Roy H.
