As jet fighter technology evolved during the Cold War, Sweden recognized the need for a supersonic fighter capable of intercepting bombers at higher altitudes and engaging fighter aircraft. Designed with double delta wings, the Saab 35 Draken was the first combat-aircraft to reach Mach 2 speeds at level flight, and the first jet to complete the tactical cobra maneuver.<\/p>\n<p>The Swedish word \u201cDraken\u201d has two separate meanings, \u201cthe dragon,\u201d or \u201cthe kite.\u201d It is believed the name was coined when the prototype appeared as a paper kite from above. Saab received export requests for the Draken prior to the jets\u2019 completion in the 1950s. In response, Saab designed multiple variants of the Draken for export. The Royal Danish Air Force (RDAF) purchased over 50 Draken jets in three different variants.
